Forest For The Trees

I remember how once
I was a small girl
With sheared-off hair
And bare feet on
This road. Looked
Upon by the trees who
Made me feel so much
Less lonely.
But now I am swallowed,
Lurking in the belly
Of this rattling mechanical beast,
Carrying me to where I
Will beat back the forest,
Something that little girl
Would never have done as she
Cried for the Amazon
And its crippled rainforests.
But that little girl
Was the anger in me
And sometimes, more than she should,
She rises.
When she falls,
She cries out and
I wake up to the rain and think
Wasn’t she beautiful?
